Lieven is not only a technical expert, but also a problem solver. His interest in solving complex problems and applying the latest technologies makes him a valuable employee of ACE.
Can you tell us about your role as lead software engineer at ACE?
Lieven: My expertise is in the field of industrial software. As lead software engineer, I am responsible for everything related to software control, PLC programming and quality assurance. I also work on standards within ACE. Our company distinguishes itself by working functionally and we have one of the best approaches to PLC programming thanks to our standards.
Programming fascinates me. The challenge lies not just in writing the software per se, but in linking the right pieces together. Actually, it starts with dividing your machine into pieces and structuring them properly. If you get this right from the start, it becomes easier to create the programme. It's not just about the code, but mainly about cleverly connecting different components.

Which projects appeal to you the most?
Lieven: I find it fascinating to look for new technologies and methods to tackle challenges. You often need something new to solve a problem. ACE is known as a pioneer in the Benelux in applying new components. The process of finding the perfect solution is often a detailed search, but I enjoy discovering that one right approach in the end.
In addition, projects that combine coming up with innovative solutions with practical work appeal to me the most.
Can you give us an example of projects you have worked on at ACE?
Lieven: My first project was immediately a big one. It was technologically advanced, with many motors with motion technology and complex operations. Another project was also complex, but not necessarily big. I like that complexity, exploring and applying new things. Coming up with solutions that are very difficult is what makes my work so interesting. It is satisfying when those solutions work and the customer is happy. And later we get to build even more machines for them based on the good solutions we came up with as a team
How do you see yourself evolving within ACE in the future?
Lieven: I feel at home at ACE with exciting and varied projects. The variety between practical tinkering on projects and coming up with solutions appeals to me.
I started at ACE in project implementation with drafting flowcharts, writing the PLC programme and testing it. First with us in our own workshop and then at customer start-ups. I still do this, and when new colleagues start, I also take care of their training and supervision. About a year and a half ago, I was given additional responsibilities in planning and execution. As lead software engineer, I split machines software-wise into different pieces so that we can work on projects together with several people. Furthermore, I also monitor the execution and also the planning of this. I like the fact that I have been given more responsibilities over the years.
I want to keep learning about new technologies. For instance, I am currently interested in applying AI in combination with vision in our field. While AI is impressive, I don't believe we should apply it for the sake of innovation itself. Simple solutions are often just as effective as complex ones. But it does offer opportunities, and I would like to explore and exploit them in future projects.
Welke projecten spreken jou het meeste aan?
Lieven: Ik vind het boeiend om op zoek te gaan naar nieuwe technologieën en methoden om uitdagingen aan te gaan. Vaak heb je iets nieuws nodig om een probleem op te lossen. ACE staat bekend als pionier in de Benelux op het gebied van het toepassen van nieuwe componenten. Het proces van het vinden van de perfecte oplossing is vaak een gedetailleerde zoektocht, maar ik geniet ervan om uiteindelijk die ene juiste aanpak te ontdekken.
Daarnaast spreken projecten waarbij het bedenken van innovatieve oplossingen wordt gecombineerd met praktisch werk mij het meeste aan.
Kun je ons een voorbeeld geven van projecten waaraan je hebt gewerkt bij ACE?
Lieven: Mijn eerste project was meteen een groot project. Het was technologisch geavanceerd, met veel motoren met motion technologie en complexe handelingen. Een ander project was ook complex, maar niet per se groot. Ik houd van die complexiteit, van het onderzoeken en toepassen van nieuwe dingen. Het bedenken van oplossingen die erg moeilijk zijn, dat is wat mijn werk zo interessant maakt. Het geeft voldoening als die oplossingen werken en de klant tevreden is. En we later voor hen nog meer machines mogen bouwen op basis van de goede oplossingen die we als team hebben bedacht.
Hoe zie je jezelf evolueren binnen ACE in de toekomst?
Lieven: Ik voel me thuis bij ACE met boeiende en gevarieerde projecten. De afwisseling tussen praktisch sleutelen aan projecten en het bedenken van oplossingen spreekt me aan.
Ik ben bij ACE begonnen in de uitvoering van projecten met het opstellen van flowcharts, het schrijven van het PLC programma en het testen ervan. Eerst bij ons in ons eigen atelier en daarna bij de opstart bij klanten. Dit doe ik nog steeds, en wanneer er nieuwe collega’s beginnen, zorg ik ook voor hun opleiding en begeleiding. Ongeveer anderhalf jaar geleden kreeg ik extra verantwoordelijkheden op het gebied van planning en uitvoering. Als lead software engineer splits ik machines softwarematig op in verschillende stukken zodat we met meerdere personen de projecten samen kunnen uitvoeren. Verder bewaak ik ook de uitvoering en ook de planning hiervan. Ik vind het fijn dat ik in de loop der jaren meer verantwoordelijkheden heb gekregen.
Ik wil blijven leren over nieuwe technologieën. Momenteel heb ik bijvoorbeeld interesse in het toepassen van AI in combinatie met visie in ons vakgebied. Hoewel AI indrukwekkend is, geloof ik niet dat we het moeten toepassen omwille van de vernieuwing zelf. Eenvoudige oplossingen zijn vaak net zo effectief als complexe. Maar het biedt wel mogelijkheden, en ik wil die graag exploreren en benutten in toekomstige projecten.
